Real Madrid sacks Benitez, appoints as replacement

Spanish club Real Madrid have officially announced the sacking of manger Rafa Benitez and have named former France international, Zinedine Zidane, as his replacement.

Reports had earlier on Monday predicted that Benitez would get the boot. His sacking was confirmed on Monday night as Real Madrid club president, Florentino Perez, addressed a world press conference.

The Real Madrid president also confirmed the appointment of Zidane as the club’s new coach.

Benitez was only in charge for seven months at Santiago Bernabeu, having been named Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement in June.

He leaves Los Blancos third in the Primera table, four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid and two adrift of Barcelona, who have a game in hand on Los Colchoneros, Benitez’s last game in charge a 2-2 draw with Valencia at Mestalla.
