‘Not fit to lace Bobby Charlton’s boots’ – Fans critical of Wayne Rooney as he equals record with dubious penalty

Wayne Rooney will have to wait to set a new all-time goalscoring record in an England shirt, but he took one step closer to Bobby Charlton’s tally with a contentious penalty strike against San Marino on Saturday.

The Three Lions were awarded a bizarre penalty early in the game, with no one really sure why the referee pointed to the spot, while San Marino players raged in protest.

Up stepped Rooney who slotted in, cool as you like, to level England and Manchester United legend Charlton’s record of 49 goals, but fans were not in a celebratory mood for the striker’s achievement.

The skipper was later substituted by manager Roy Hodgson, meaning Rooney could break Charlton’s record in front of the home support against Switzerland at Wembley next week, but supporters insist even if he passes the tally – he will never be on par with the World Cup winner
